If you’re like me, you probably don’t think much about your garbage disposal until it smells like something died in it. We actually had our garbage disposal break down once, and as I read through the care instructions, (yes, I am that person that reads the care instructions… no judgment please), I found a few good housekeeping tips for keeping your garbage disposal running smoothly.
Here’s What You’ll Need
- Ice Cube Tray
- Citrus Peels (Orange, Lemon, Lime, whatever you happen to have is fine)
NEVER, ever, ever…ever put your hand anywhere near the disposal! If something isn’t going down, turn off the disposal and gently push it in with a kitchen utensil.
Okay, with that Public Service Announcement out of the way, let’s get started.
First step: make some vinegar ice cubes. Once you’ve got your vinegar cubes, run your garbage disposal to chew up anything that’s currently in there. (One “fascinating” factoid I learned while reading the instruction manual is that you are only supposed to run the disposal with cold water. Apparently the cold will solidify any grease, causing it to grind up with the food, versus liquefying it, causing it to harden later and clog the system… I know, fascinating).
Continue to let the cold water run, and with the disposal still on, drop in a couple of the vinegar ice cubes: The vinegar works as an antibacterial, cutting down on the germs, and because it’s also ice, it helps to sharpen the blades. Last, put some citrus peels in to help freshen it up, and you’re done.
Please note- You should never pour drippings (fat/grease) down the garbage disposal, so here’s a simple solution… This is how I used to keep my gross fat… yes, in a see-through tupperware so all those who entered my home could see it… seriously? What was I thinking?
So, here’s the new solution… I found a tea tin at World Market that perfectly holds a soup/vegetable can.
Now I can put the grease in the can that’s housed behind the pretty tin. When the can is full, I can just remove it, and throw it away. Doesn’t this look so much better?
