Cleaning Tips

11 Mar

I am a natural-born skeptic. I never believe anything until I try it for myself. So when I read that black tea could be used as glass cleaner, I had to give it a try. Here’s exactly what I did, along with the results.

As I was getting ready this morning, I noticed one of the mirrors in our bathroom was full of splatters. I decided to forego my usual mirror-cleaning method and try something new: black tea.

Ingredients Needed to Make Black Tea Glass Cleaner

  • Black Tea– I could only find Earl Grey at my grocery store, which is black tea with a bit of bergamot oil, so that’s what I went with.

Supplies Needed to Make Mirror & Window Cleaner

  • Spray Bottle
  • Microwave-Safe Container– Preferably a glass liquid measuring cup
  • Funnel (Optional)- This helps prevent spills when transferring to the spray bottle, especially if the container you’re using doesn’t have a spout

How to Make Black Tea Glass Cleaner

Start by adding 1 cup of water to a microwave safe container.

Then add in 3 bags of black tea and allow them to seep for 15 minutes.

When the time is up, remove the tea bags and allow the tea to cool.

Once cooled, pour the tea mixture into a spray bottle, using a funnel to prevent spills (if desired).

To use: Spray onto glass surfaces and wipe with a window cleaning cloth or lint-free cloth.

Here’s the before and after…

A few days after trying this on the bathroom mirrors, I decided to tackle a few windows… nothing like spring sunshine coming through to show you how dirty they are. I’m not sure if this is a testament to how dirty my windows were or how amazing this black tea glass cleaner is, but look at all the dirt from one window!

I love when a natural ingredient works as well as (or better than) a store-bought product full of dyes and fragrances. I’m not sure I’ll forego my Norwex window/enviro cloth method, which only requires water, but this method definitely worked well… and the tea smelled amazing!

*Please note: Concentrated black tea can stain any cloths used. If you are concerned, please use a disposable cloth (or one you don’t care about 🙂 )

Common Questions About DIY Glass Cleaner

How Long Will Black Tea Glass Cleaner Last?

The black tea cleaner should last up to a week in fridge. However, if you notice it getting cloudy or smelling “off”, it’s time to toss it out and make a new batch. Alternately, you could make a smaller amount using 2/3 cup water and two tea bags (or even 1/3 cup and one tea bag).

Why Does Black Tea Work As A Glass Cleaner?

Black tea contains natural tannins that break down oils and grime, so it makes a great natural glass cleaner.
