If you have a home office, you may be dealing with unsightly cords strewn about. These never look good, and for clumsy people (like me), they create a safety hazard. Today I’m sharing how I was able to hide all the cords in our home office.

Farmhouse style desk in middle of office

When I first started planning our office makeover, one of the things I knew I wanted to change was the layout of the desk. I no longer wanted it sitting up against the wall (’cause who wants to stare at a wall all day?). Instead, I wanted the desk to “float” in the middle of the room. But, when I got the desk placed just where I wanted it, I realized I had one major issue. Cords. I had nowhere to plug in my lamp and computer without stringing cords across the room. A slight panic attack ensued. Not only am I clumsy, and sure to trip over the cords, it also looked terrible. I needed a solution.

What You Need to Hide Office Cords

  • Extension Cord (Optional)

How to Hide Cords With Floating Desk

I knew I was going to need an extension cord, because the desk lamp cord would never make it to the outlet behind my desk. My computer cord is also fairly short, and with the idea I had in mind, I was going to need a longer cord. (You may, or may not, need to do the same.) I plugged the lamp and computer into the extension cord and used a command strip to secure the “outlet part” of the extension cord under the desk. Make sure you place this in an area where you can still plug/unplug your items when necessary. Also make sure not to place it anywhere that may interfere with the opening and closing of drawers.

My first mission was to hide the extension cord going from the outlet to the underside of the desk. Luckily I have a rug, so I slipped the extension cord under it.

***UPDATE*** A reader actually told me that placing extension cords under rugs are a big no-no. After a bit of research, I discovered that extension cords can actually overheat when placed under items like rugs and carpeting which creates a fire hazard, so I would advise using a cord protector to prevent tripping hazards instead.

Next, I grabbed the Command hooks, and started stringing the cord up the leg of the desk, securing it with the hooks. What I love is that these little hooks aren’t going to ruin my new desk if I decide to do something different one day.

The last step was to use the hooks to secure the remaining extension cord, as well as the cords from the computer and lamp, to the underside of the desk. I kept adding hooks until all the cords were completely hidden. Make sure to watch your placement so you aren’t inhibiting the use of any drawers that may be in the way. Here’s what the underside of my desk looks like.

That was all there was too it. It took me about 15 minutes to complete this project, and I am smitten with the results.

Okay, I have to start by saying that I have never EVER left a Pinterest comment, but this time I am just so overcome by gratitude that I just had to. I’m trying to organize/redecorate an out of control apartment, but I have really, REALLY bad ADHD, so overwhelming DIY projects just don’t work for me. When I saw this pin I just knew I had found “the one”. I’ll be your faithful follower from now on.
