$100 Room Challenge· Room Makeovers

3 Feb

Today marks the beginning of another $100 Room Challenge. I figured that since I redid the cleaning closet last month, I’d just pop right next door and conquer the coat closet as well.

Since we worked on cleaning out our closets for the 8 Week Cleaning Challenge, I decided I’d snap a shot before any cleaning began, and one after I cleaned it out.

Goals for Our Coat Closet Makeover

Goal 1: Paint

This closet is in desperate need of some paint. There are scuff marks all over the place.

Goal 2: Cover the Wire Shelving

Again with the wire shelving… This time I’m hoping to do another wood overlay like I did in the laundry room, but because there is an additional piece that comes down from the shelving for hanging coats, I’m thinking of going white this time.

Goal 3: Coordinated Storage

On the top shelf, we have a basket to hold hats and mittens, a plastic tote to hold items for playing out in the snow, and then a smaller bin for housing shoe care products. Random. I’d love to find some matching bins/baskets to use instead.

Goal 4: Update the Boot Tray

Last thing is to upgrade the plastic mat that holds a couple pairs of boots. I don’t need something new, but maybe make the current one look a little more attractive…

That’s really all this closet needs. Should be a pretty easy fix for this space.

Something I’ve seen lots of times but never gets old is placing river rocks in the boot tray. I wonder how practical it is and if it helps with drainage/drying of boots, but I’m figuring it must work or people wouldn’t do it. Looking forward to seeing what you pull off with $100 in this closet!

I was actually thinking of doing the river rock thing. I just need to figure out how to secure them in there (I have done zero looking into how to secure them by the way). I’m not sure having rocks all over the closet is what I’m going for 🙂

I don’t get the impression they’re supposed to be secured. I thought for a second you could use a little cement or epoxy, but I think the point is the moisture is supposed to drain into the rocks. We don’t have snow here so I could be way overthinking this. ?

Scouring Pinterest and it seems you are right. I saw only one example of the stones being glued down. How easy is that? I suppose, since it’s in a closet, I limit the stone throwing my children might partake it… Correction. My child might partake in. I only have one that would actually take the stones out 🙂
